I have found my New favourite Artist!

Dan Mumford

 'Dan Mumford'

This Illustration 'Homesick' is one of my favourite pieces of design, I love the dark nature of Mumford's art and the colours used to enhance the already great piece of design.
After looking through his website (Link below) at all his different concepts done in his unique style, its easy to see why so many well known bands hire him to do the artwork for their tee shirts and cd covers.
I will be taking a lot of inspiration from Mumford into my own designs in the future.

My 3-D Sculptures and Set

SELF SCULPT OF JACK

I am really happy with this sculpt I did because of the detail and smooth finish I achieved.

This self portrait sculpt was done in Super Sculpey firm.
I started by making the overall shape of my armature with wire that I then wrapped with foil to bulk it up.
Next I placed the Super Sculpey Firm clay around the figure and started cutting out the grooves to make the details.
to finish off the sculpture I added clay to make the hair clothes and bracelets before baking it in the oven to harden the sculpt.

I did the same for this sculpture as I had for the one above, but before I baked the sculpture I rubbed lighter fluid into the clay to make it smoother and then rubbed it down with sandpaper after I had taken it out of the oven for a similar result.

Home sweet home... well it was at one point, This fire damaged living room is My favourite set I have built to date. To create this room I used hot glue to stick 4 pieces of chip board together to make the floor, two walls and ceiling. With this starting point done I proceeded to chop up lolly pop sticks to make floor boards that I stuck down with PVC glue then painted it with a mix of brown paint and wood dye. The carpet was cut out of a old Jacket I found and placed down. Next I made the door and furniture by calving into balsa wood and sticking extra pieces on. The books took the longest to make as I had to cut out hundreds of pieces of paper to a certain size for the pages, the I had to cut out covers using cardboard attached to wire that I then wrapped in print out book covers. Then glue all of the parts together in a way that the books would open and close. The wall paper was easiest as I simply bought some normal wall paper cut it into lengths and stuck it down in ways to make it appear as if it was peeling off the wall. To finish off I applied the burnt effect by getting a lighter and holding it close to the objects that I wanted to turn chard.

People who have influenced me

Ever since I was 8 I have loved Tim Burton's work,he is the main reason I wanted to study animation in university. His dark and extremely unique style has been something that I have used to inspire a lot of my 3-D sculptures and I want to influence my installations.

Some of my favourite films by Tim Burton include, Nightmare before Christmas, The Corpse Bride and Frankenweenie.

Nathan and Josh Flynn are both exceptional sculptors who have kept me interested in everything they do since the day I found their work. The twins went to the same university as me and specialized in the same subject that I am currently working on myself. I look at their work to learn what process they use because they achieve such incredible detail in their work and leave a detailed explanation of how they do their work on their own blogs: http://nathan-flynn.blogspot.co.uk/  http://joshua-flynn.blogspot.co.uk/

Wallace and Gromit is how everyone thinks of claymation  and I'm no different, when ever I am asked to explain what I do in university I simply reply I make sculptures for animation and when people look confused I add "I do what they do in Wallace and Gromit" and they instantly understand. Nick Park has created something incredible in his unique, instantly recognisable style, I love the way he has created the eyes and mouths of his characters in shows such as Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, and  Creature Comforts.

Black Bird

Black Bird drawing

The Tee Shirt I'm currently working on is inspired by a raven in mid hunt, I have looked at a some photographs for comparison until I came up with this illustration. Currently I have done the colouring in a few stages on Photoshop and used each stage as a potential  tee shirt design.

Below is the stages of colouring but I will only be using one for my final tee shirt design.

First stage was done in black and white although I like using a simple colour pallet and the lack of colours would be cheaper to print I wanted the finished tee shirt to be dynamic.

Next I added red as the base colour.

The finished Design and possibly my favourite colour scheme.
I have not decided yet but this may be the main tee shirt.

A raven in flight with many bright dynamic colours is the tee shirt design I was planning on using for my final piece but after the colour process I am not sure which is my favourite to use

Skull

Do you fear death or do you embrace it? This design came about from a university project where I was asked to design a character concept, develop it and then make a 3-D model.
After illustrating a portrait of Death I cropped it and layer it side by side four times each with a different coloured filter before adding the company print over the top.

Star Crossed

Have you ever looked up and the stars and thought that the right person for you is doing the same at that very moment. Do you believe in star crossed lovers, in fate, that there is one perfect fit for everyone.
If you didn't before you should now as this tee shirt was made for you!

Although my 'Star Crossed' tee shirt is extremely basic and lacking in colour I am happy with it. Playing on the term star crossed lovers is what inspired this design and it was created in sections. I started By drawing the cross in pen and then on separate pieces of paper drawing the star and then the banner. All that was left then was to layer them on top of each other with Photoshop.

Baby Alien Tee

Are aliens real? I mean how do we know for sure? the thought of one day Earth being taken over by Aliens is terrifying, Look at him he's so scary with his big round eyes and posh black shoes...

The Baby Alien tee shirt is one of my favourite designs due to its simplicity and style. I am really happy with the outcome because of the colour and finished design.
To create this design I started with a quick pencil drawing that I proceeded  to ink over before scanning the image onto Photoshop. I used the paint tool to create the dark lines and a gradient bucket tool for the blue.
